Essay 6 Artificial Darwinism : The Very Idea ! ∗
نویسنده
چکیده
The realisation of artificial Darwinian evolution is one conceivable—indeed, more or less obvious— route toward the realisation of a growth of knowledge (or “complexity”) in artificial systems. This paper explores the current state of the art in achieving Artificial Darwinism, and the prospects for further progress. In particular, I reassess the seminal work of von Neumann on evolution in cellular automata (von Neumann 1951; 1966a; 1966b). I also review the Genetic Algorithm (Holland 1975), and the VENUS (Rasmussen et al. 1990) and Tierra (Ray 1992) systems. I attempt to relate this to the work of Varela, and others, on the realisation of autopoiesis in related (discrete, 2-dimensional, homogenous) spaces (Varela et al. 1974; Zeleny 1977; Zelany & Pierre 1976), and I also revisit the Holland α-universes (Holland 1976; McMullin 1992d). I suggest that while both open-ended heredity (von Neumann style “self-reproduction”) and spontaneous autopoiesis have been separately demonstrated in such systems, the combination of the two remains a difficult outstanding problem. I conclude by outlining an avenue for further investigation.

Arti cial Life is, by its nature, an interdisciplinary research programme; it will involve biologists, of course, but also philosophers, mathematicians, chemists, computer scientists|and perhaps even (as in my case) engineers. Success in our endeavours will require some of us, at least, to venture into foreign territory. This essay is a log of my personal expedition into evolutionary biology. I...

The notion that genes play a uniquely distinguished rôle in biological evolution has been championed by Richard Dawkins (1976; 1989b). Furthermore, Dawkins has argued that this idea can be generalised in a way which makes it applicable to any properly Darwinian evolutionary process, at least if that process gives rise to a growth in adaptive complexity (Dawkins 1983). It is evident, therefore, ...

The term “social Darwinism” owes its currency and many of its connotations to Richard Hofstadter’s influential Social Darwinism in American Thought, 1860–1915 (SDAT). The postSDATmeanings of “social Darwinism” are the product of an unresolvedWhiggish tension in SDAT: Hofstadter championed economic reform over free markets, but he also condemned biology in social science, this while many progres...

The problem tackled in this essay is to formulate \Darwinian" theory in a way which is divorced from any speci cally biological interpretation. For my purposes, the crucial constraint on this abstract formulation of Darwinian theory is that it must qualify as a realisation of unjusti ed variation and selective retention in the sense of D.T. Campbell (1960a; 1960b; 1974)|for it is (arguably) onl...

Chemistry and biology are intimately connected sciences yet the chemistry-biology interface remains problematic and central issues regarding the very essence of living systems remain unresolved. In this essay we build on a kinetic theory of replicating systems that encompasses the idea that there are two distinct kinds of stability in nature-thermodynamic stability, associated with "regular" ch...
